I currently have the choice of a selection of new Nokia phones. I have the choice between 5610, 6220, 6300, 6301, 6500.

Anybody got any idea what the best of those is?

Since I posted about starting my own business I have had so many positive comments from people. I just wanted to thank everyone who offered support or wishes of luck. It's given me a lot of confidence to know that a lot of other people have confidence in my abilities to pull this off.

There are a few people who knew about my plan in advance of me telling the world and they are great, keeping quiet and guiding me back to reality.

Thanks all.

APIOL [Jun. 20th, 2008|05:26 pm]
Today I was recognised as an APIOL. This is the outdoor industries equivilent of chartered status. It's taken 6 months, 8000 words of explanation and a 2 hour interview.

Apparently I was a 'strong candidate'.

This pleases me.

Next Steps [Jun. 16th, 2008|11:12 pm]
There must be something in the air. Today I handed in my notice and I leave in mid-september. After four years at Boulder it wasn't an easy thing to do, I love my job here and have a lot to be proud of.

I'm off to start my own company. Based in Wiltshire (which means I can live with Ruth) offering personal development in the outdoors. I've got three months to sort out an office, build a brand, find an accountant and recruit some staff. Then of course I need to find some customers. I also need to rent out our house and and move my stuff. The company will be called "Totem Personal Development" and will provide similar services to that which I do already, but with my spin on them.

I'm pleased I've done it. Like all hard decisions, the answer was obvious but taking the action was hard. I work much better to a deadline and now I have one.

I am certain the next couple of years are likely to be some of the hardest of my life but I am looking forward to them. I have felt the need to get my teeth into a big challenge for a while now and now I have one. I shall, no doubt, pester many of you for favours over the next few months and I want to make it clear now, I will not be offended if you cannot oblige.

Here's to a busy but successful future.

Sam

A question... [May. 1st, 2008|09:33 am]
If you could go back a few years and tell your 14 year old self something, what would it be?

Battered Chin [Mar. 25th, 2008|04:24 am]

Battered Chin Uploaded by Sam Moore.
I had my first trip to A&E in twenty years yesterday, courtesy of the spectacularly daft act of hitting myself in the chin with my own ice axe.

Thankfully I had packed a doctor and he did a great job of applying steristrips neatly so the wound was sealed and straight. In A&E they just glued it and told me I'm not allowed to shave for 24 hours. I'm told it will likely heal with only a very small scar, which is nice.

SInce this is the only time I've had to visit hospital in 15+ years of playing in the outdoors, I think I'm still coasting above average.

New Year Resolution [Jan. 3rd, 2008|05:55 pm]
From the inimitable Neil Gaiman.

"May your coming year be filled with magic and dreams and good madness. I hope you read some fine books and kiss someone who thinks you're wonderful, and don't forget to make some art -- write or draw or build or sing or live as only you can. And I hope, somewhere in the next year, you surprise yourself."

I don't have the ability to male polls but here is a quick question for you.

At work, would you rather be led or managed?

All opinions gratefully received.

Ruth shot this photo of a painted car in Iceland. Somebody viewing the photo recognised it and mentioned the owner who got in touch, how cool is that!

(no subject) [Dec. 7th, 2007|11:30 pm]
Tonight two friends and I walked up into the old quarries behind the village, built a fireplace from some pieces of slate and lit a fire. Under the stars we toasted marshmallows and put the world to rights. There was a cold wind but lots of layers and the fire kept us warm.

Now my eyes are red and my hair and clothes smell of smoke but I don't care, it was just nice to be out doing something.
